What a night it was on the track in Paris! In a close finish, American sprinter Noah Lyles clinched the gold in the men's 100m sprint, marking the first time in 20 years an American man has won the event at the Olympics. Lyles and Jamaican sprinter Kishane Thompson stopped the clock at an identical 9.79 seconds, and the photo finish revealed Lyles had edged out Thompson by a mere five-thousandths of a second.
Thompson bagged the silver for Jamaica, in what will surely go down as one of the most exciting finishes in Olympic sprinting history.
Meanwhile, it was a banner day for Australia in the high jump. For the first time ever, two Aussies found themselves on the podium in a field event. Nicola Olyslagers took silver in the high jump, repeating her achievement from Tokyo, and Eleanor Patterson rounded out the podium with a bronze. They were up against stiff competition, including Ukrainian Yaroslava Mahuchikh, who recently broke the world record. Still, the Australians shone when it counted.
The action wasn't confined to the track and field. In the pool, Meg Harris claimed her first individual Olympic medal, a silver in the women's 50m freestyle. The Aussie relay teams also performed – the women’s 4x100m medley relay team earned silver while the men finished sixth.
