Sliding down snow-covered slopes, where the rider's feet are attached with bindings to skis, is the sport of alpine skiing, also commonly known as downhill skiing. Practiced for recreation and competition, alpine skiing can be practiced on ski resorts with lifts, groomed snow, artificial snow machines and ski patrol. It is also practiced by the more adventurous in the off-piste version, where riders use helicopters or snow mobiles to access terrain more rarely used.
