Kitsunekan Karate

Kitsunekan Karate is a highly respected sports club located in Perth, Western Australia. Founded by instructor Mick Todd, who holds the rank of 2nd Dan, Kitsunekan Karate offers traditional karate training in a welcoming and supportive environment.

Mick Todd began his martial arts journey in 1997, training in a club that incorporated the Goju and Shotokan styles. He later expanded his training to include Jujitsu and Japanese Kobudo, further enhancing his understanding and expertise in the martial arts. After leaving his former karate club, Mick trained with various instructors and earned the rank of Shodan under the syllabus of Sensei Bob McMahon of the Australian Karate Academy.

Kitsunekan Karate distinguishes itself by being a form of traditional karate that is not aligned with any major style. The club focuses on utilising older forms of basic kata such as Pinan and Naifanchi for training purposes. Advanced students and those interested in competition practise modern Shito- or Goju-Ryu kata. Kitsunekan Karate emphasises the importance of karate as a simple and effective means of self-defence, rather than a performance routine.

Partner training and learning form a significant part of the club's curriculum to ensure the practical application of kata.

The name “Kitsunekan” holds special significance within Japanese folklore. “Kitsune” translates to fox and is associated with intelligence and magic. Foxes are often depicted as guardians, possessing wisdom and the ability to assume human form. Kitsune are closely linked to the Shinto kami Inari and serve as messengers.

Inari's kitsune are considered symbols of good omen and have the power to ward off evil. The name “Kitsunekan” pays homage to the rich history and mythology surrounding foxes in Japanese culture.
