Using a map and compass to navigate from point to point over diverse and usually unknown terrain is the sport of orienteering. Participants start with a given topographical map and make their way to different pre-planned points. Usually done on foot, orienteering can also be done with any mode of transport. Participants need mental stamina and stress management skills, and the physical attributes needed to navigate around the course.
