Firstly, Scientia-Do is not a style of martial art. Scientia-Do is simply the name of our club.
The name "Scientia-Do" comes from the Latin word "Scientia" which means "knowledge or skill", and the Japanese / Korean word "Do" which means "the way of".
Hence, in Scientia-Do we train in "the way of knowledge" or the "way of skill".
Practically this means our club is for people who are interested in self-defence, strength, flexibility, and personal development.
During Scientia-Do training you will be introduced to several martial arts, specifically the Korean martial art of "Tae Kwon-Do". Tae Kwon-Do is a modern martial art, characterised by its fast, high and spinning kicks. There are multiple interpretations of the name Tae Kwon-Do …
Tae "to strike or block with the foot", "to kick", "to jump"
Kwon "fist", "to strike or block with hand"
Do "the way of", "art"
Putting this together, Tae Kwon-Do is … "The art of Kicking and Punching" or "The art of unarmed combat".
At the higher levels of training, you will also be introduced to several techniques from the Japanese martial art of "Aikido". Aikido is often translated as "The Way of Harmony of the Spirit". Aikido focuses mainly upon "throwing" and "locking" techniques, and not on punching or kicking opponents. The goal is to use the attackers own energy to gain control of them or to throw them away from you. It is not usually a stationary art, but places great emphasis on motion and the dynamics of movement.
Therefore, once you have spent several years training in Scientia-Do will have gained methods and techniques that will provide you with the ability to effectively defend yourself and your family.
