About

The idea of the formation of the Sunbury Rugby League Club came about as Ted and Maureen Riley were watching a Rugby League game between Australia and New Zealand in 1991 at Olympic Park. During the half-time break they wondered if Rugby League would be able to take off as a viable sport in Sunbury. They decided to advertise in the local paper and received 26 replies. The first meeting of the Club, as such, was held at the Railway Hotel, Sunbury, on the 17th September 1991.

The group applied to the VRL for membership, but unfortunately they couldn’t afford the fees, which were around $5,000. At this time there was a person who had decided to form up a separate (Rebel) League in Melbourne and run separately to the VRL competition. This association became what was to be called the Melbourne and District Amateur Rugby League. The newly formed Sunbury Club decided that it would be their best option to join up with this new League and look forward to kicking off in the game in 1992.
