About

Surf Lifesaving North Queensland is a renowned sports club based in Cairns. Established on September 30th, 1950, the club was formed by representatives from three clubs: Cairns, Etty Bay, and Mission Beach. S. Flegler was elected as the first Branch President.

Over the years, the club has expanded to include Yorkey's Knob SLSC in 1952, Ellis Beach SLSC in 1957, and Port Douglas SLSC in 1980.

With its unique expertise in tropical water safety and marine stinger protection, Surf Lifesaving North Queensland has been providing exceptional service to the public for many years. The club is proud to be a part of Surf Life Saving Australia, an institution dedicated to the vision of zero preventable deaths in Queensland waters.

Monthly newsletters are produced by the club to keep members and the public informed about upcoming events and activities. These newsletters include important updates and highlights specific to the North Queensland Branch.

Surf Lifesaving North Queensland recognises the importance of beach safety, especially during the high-risk marine stinger season from November to May. To ensure the safety of swimmers, it is advised to swim between the red and yellow flags and in the nets. Wearing a stinger suit is highly recommended, and it is always good practise to communicate with the lifesavers or lifeguards present. Additionally, keeping children within arm's reach is crucial for their safety.

The club offers various awards and opportunities for members to engage in Surf Sports. Surf Life Saving is widely recognised as the most effective surf rescue service globally, and participating in surf sports plays a vital role in improving lifesaving skills, fitness, and motivation. People of all ages and skill levels can enjoy these activities, from beginners to professionals.

Surf Lifesaving North Queensland emphasises the importance of community involvement and welcomes individuals to be a part of their organisation. There are diverse roles available, and each day brings unique experiences and opportunities. The skills acquired through involvement in Surf Life Saving not only contribute to saving lives and serving the community but also open doors to unexpected pathways.

The club's website showcases surf reports and updates. Being aware of potential risks, such as marine stingers, is crucial when venturing into Australian waters. While most sea creatures are generally easy to avoid, certain tropical species, like the Irukandji and Box Jellyfish, can cause discomfort or even be lethal if encountered.

Surf Lifesaving North Queensland consists of various surf clubs, including Port Douglas SLSC, Ellis Beach SLSC, Cairns SLSC, Etty Bay SLSC, and Mission Beach SLSC. Each club contributes to the overall mission of providing support and direction for a safe aquatic environment, promoting life-saving services, youth development, and surf sports.

The club's mission is to ensure a safe aquatic environment and promote life-saving services, youth development, and surf sports, while their vision is to achieve zero preventable deaths in Queensland public waters.

Surf Lifesaving North Queensland invites individuals to join their cause and become a part of their community. The club's calendar features upcoming carnival dates, and their website provides further information and contact details for interested individuals.

Overall, Surf Lifesaving North Queensland is a dedicated sports club committed to ensuring the safety of swimmers and providing opportunities for members to engage in surf sports while upholding the values and vision of Surf Life Saving Australia.
