Thirsty Thursday Hash House Harriers is a vibrant and enthusiastic sports club based in Gold Coast, Australia. With a focus on combining fitness, fun, and socialising, this club welcomes individuals of all ages and fitness levels to participate in their unique form of exercise.
At Thirsty Thursday Hash House Harriers, members engage in the exhilarating sport of “hashing. ” Originating in Malaysia in the 1930s, hashing is a non-competitive running or walking event. The Gold Coast chapter of this global phenomenon meets every Thursday evening, rain or shine, at various locations around the city. Whether you are a seasoned runner or just starting out, this club offers a supportive and inclusive environment that encourages everyone to join in the adventure.
The club's weekly hashing events typically consist of a pre-determined trail, marked in advance by the “hares. ” Participants, known as “hashers,” follow the trail, encountering various obstacles, detours, and sometimes even surprises along the way. The main objective is not to achieve the fastest time, but rather to enjoy the journey, make new friends, and have a well-deserved drink at the finish line.
After the run or walk, members gather for “down-downs,” a traditional ceremony unique to hashing. This is a time to honour the efforts of individuals, celebrate milestones, and share humorous stories from the trail. With a focus on camaraderie and laughter, Thirsty Thursday Hash House Harriers fosters a sense of community among its members, creating lasting friendships beyond the sport itself.
In addition to the weekly activities, this sports club also organises special events and themed runs throughout the year. From costume runs to charity fundraisers, these occasions offer a chance for members to showcase their creativity, support worthy causes, and have an unforgettable time in the process.
Thirsty Thursday Hash House Harriers is more than just a sports club – it is a community that embraces fitness, adventure, and socialising. Whether you are a local resident or just passing through Gold Coast, this club provides an exciting and engaging way to stay active, explore the city, and connect with like-minded individuals. So lace up your running shoes, grab your sense of humour, and come join in the hashing fun with Thirsty Thursday Hash House Harriers!
