West Australian Kyudo Association

The West Australian Kyudo Association (WAKA) is a sports club based in Perth, Western Australia, dedicated to the practise and promotion of Kyudo, the Japanese martial art of archery. Kyudo, which translates to “The Way of the Bow,” is considered to be the purest of all martial ways.

In the past, the Japanese bow was used for various purposes such as hunting, war, court ceremonies, games, and contests of skill. The ancient schools of archery, known as ryu, have survived to this day, along with their traditional ceremonies and games. However, modern Kyudo is primarily practised as a means of physical, moral, and spiritual development.

The essence of modern Kyudo lies in the pursuit of truth, goodness, and beauty. Truth is manifested in shooting that is pure and right-minded, where attitude, movement, and technique unite in perfect harmony. A true shot in Kyudo is not just one that hits the target's centre, but one where the arrow exists in the target before its release.

Goodness, in Kyudo, is displayed through proper attitude, behaviour, courtesy, compassion, morality, and non-aggression in all situations. A good Kyudo archer maintains composure and grace even in times of stress or conflict.

Beauty is found in the exquisite grace and artistry of the Japanese bow and the traditional archer's attire. It is also present in the refined etiquette that surrounds the Kyudo ceremony. Etiquette, which encompasses common courtesy and respect for others, is an essential element of Kyudo practise.

The West Australian Kyudo Association offers regular training sessions and welcomes beginners and interested observers. The main venue for training is Indoor Archery WA, located at 26 Sphinx Way, Bibra Lake, Perth. Training sessions take place on Sundays from 9 am to 11 am.

The club actively participates in national events organised by Kyudo Australia. Members can find updates on club activities, as well as links to seminars and training sessions locally, interstate, and in Japan, on the club's official web page.
