About

Arena BJJ is a renowned martial arts school based in Montreal, led by Head Coach Marcello JJ. Marcello Tolentino is a 3rd degree Black Belt under Master Evanri Gurgel Jr. , a Black Belt 6th degree and the founder of Team Arena. With over 30 years of experience in Martial Arts, Head Coach Marcello JJ has a strong foundation in Judo, having started training at the age of 5 under coach Neuri Tussolino in South Brazil (Curitiba/Paran).

For more information, visit the Arena Montreal Facebook page.

The school offers classes for students of all levels, from beginners to advanced practitioners. The training schedules run from Monday through Thursday, with separate sessions for Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, and Kids classes. Arena BJJ aims to cater to a diverse range of students, providing a welcoming and inclusive environment for individuals of all ages and backgrounds.

The roots of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu can be traced back to the early 20th century, with the teachings of individuals such as Geo Omori and Mitsuyo Maeda. Maeda, in particular, played a pivotal role in spreading Jiu-Jitsu to Brazil, where it was further developed by individuals like Carlos Gracie and Hlio Gracie. The Gracie family's lineage has become synonymous with BJJ, although other prominent lineages, such as that of Oswaldo Fadda, have also made significant contributions to the art.

The name “Jiu-Jitsu” is an older romanization that was commonly used in the West, with the modern Hepburn romanization being “jjutsu. “ The distinction between Jiu-Jitsu and Judo was clarified by Professor Kano, who emphasized the technical differences between the two disciplines. Despite some confusion over terminology, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has become a globally recognized martial art, known for its emphasis on ground fighting and grappling techniques.

At Arena BJJ, students have the opportunity to learn from experienced instructors, develop their skills, and engage in a challenging yet rewarding training environment. Whether you are a seasoned practitioner or a complete beginner, Arena BJJ welcomes you to join their community and experience the benefits of this traditional martial art. Embrace the journey of self-discovery, discipline, and growth with Arena BJJ in Montreal.
