Associated Karate Schools (AKS) is a renowned martial arts school located in Cambourne Village College, Cambridge. With over 25 years of experience, AKS provides professional tuition in Traditional and Sport Karate for both children and adults of all abilities. Founded and led by Chief Instructor Sensei Anthony Barrett, a 5th Dan black belt, AKS offers a welcoming and inclusive environment for individuals looking to learn and excel in the art of karate.
In addition to the Cambourne location, AKS also has branches in Bishop's Stortford and Royston. Sensei Anthony Barrett opened the Bishop's Stortford Karate School in 1995, and later established the Cambourne Karate School in 2007. The Royston Karate School was opened in 2013 under the instruction of Sensei Rafal Ratuszniak, a 2nd Dan black belt.
AKS is proud to be a registered association member of the English Karate Federation (EKF), a governing body, since 2008. They are also affiliated with the World Karate Federation (WKF). All AKS instructors have enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks, Public Liability Insurance, First Aid Training, and EKF Coach Accreditation.
The AKS teaching approach follows a Progressive Teaching Structure, where students work through a Grading Syllabus that builds upon their previous knowledge and skills. This ensures that students develop a strong foundation and are able to perform the entire Syllabus from white to black belt and beyond with proficiency, speed, and technical knowledge.
AKS offers training in three core areas: Traditional Karate, Sport Karate, and Practical Self-Defence. Traditional Karate focuses on the fighting art without the use of weapons, emphasising physical exercises and breathing techniques taught by Indian monk Bodhidharma. Sport Karate incorporates competitive aspects of the martial art, providing students with opportunities to participate in tournaments and competitions. Practical Self-Defence equips students with essential skills to protect themselves in real-life situations.
To further enhance the students' karate performance and prevent injuries, AKS incorporates various forms of fitness training techniques into their syllabus. These techniques are specifically designed to improve strength, flexibility, and overall physical conditioning.
