Bury Lake Young Mariners

Bury Lake Young Mariners (BLYM) is a highly esteemed sailing school and club located in Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire. Established 40 years ago, this local youth charity has been dedicated to promoting the development of life skills in young people through the exciting and educational medium of sailing and related activities. BLYM boasts a picturesque location at the Rickmansworth Aquadrome and operates with the help of over 300 passionate volunteers.

At BLYM, inclusivity is at the heart of their ethos, and the club warmly welcomes new members. With over 6000 people taking to the water each year, the club offers a wide range of all-inclusive sailing and powerboat courses. These courses are certified by the prestigious Royal Yachting Association (RYA) and cater to individuals aged 9 upwards, including adults. Additionally, BLYM offers short fun sessions specially designed for 7-9 year-olds, ensuring that sailing is accessible and enjoyable for all ages.

In celebration of their 40th anniversary, BLYM has planned various events throughout the year. As a prominent figure in the sailing community, they continuously aim to engage their members and keep them informed about upcoming celebrations. Safety is of utmost importance at BLYM, and they prioritise the well-being of their members and equipment. In the event of high floodwaters, as recently experienced, BLYM takes proactive action by temporarily closing the club facilities and suspending all on-water activities. By monitoring conditions closely, the club ensures a safe environment for all, reopening as soon as water levels recede to acceptable levels.

Fundraising plays a crucial role in supporting BLYM's charitable initiatives and ensuring their continued success. Donations of any amount are highly appreciated and make a significant difference. Supporters have the option to make a one-off donation or set up a monthly contribution. Additionally, individuals can help raise funds through easyfundraising, where BLYM collects free donations every time supporters make an online purchase.

Another unique way to support the club is by purchasing a personalised brick, which will be proudly displayed in the new clubhouse building, recognising the contributions of past and present members.

BLYM is immensely grateful for the support they receive from their local community and various organisations. Through the Magic Little Grants initiative by LocalGiving, which supports grassroots charities and community groups, BLYM has been able to obtain new equipment, such as radios and buoyancy aids, to enhance safety and provide exceptional sailing experiences for their members.
