Dawlish Swimming Club, one of the oldest clubs in Devon, boasts a rich history dating back to 1865, making it the region’s second-oldest club. Founded with a strong connection to water polo, the club once held training and matches in the sea.
A historic highlight for Dawlish Swimming Club came in 1908 when Frederick Holman clinched an Olympic gold in the 200 metres breaststroke, a proud yet bittersweet memory due to his early passing from typhoid.
Since 1974, the club has trained at the indoor Dawlish Leisure Centre, featuring a 25m, five-lane pool. This facility evolved over the years with refurbishments in 1981 and 1994, adding a sports hall and cementing its status as a comprehensive training ground.
Dawlish Swimming Club now schedules early morning sessions for dedicated swimmers, while top squads enjoy up to six training sessions weekly, targeting county and regional qualifiers without external support.
The club competes actively in various leagues, with notable success in the local mini-league established in 1977 and the Speedo (now Arena) League since 2000. Dawlish has shined in Divisions 1 and 2 and hosts an annual summer gala featuring events for all ages and strokes.
Driven by committed volunteers under strong leadership, Dawlish Swimming Club prides itself on inclusivity, welcoming swimmers aiming for fitness or competitive success at County, Regional, or National levels. Training sessions are held at Trinity School in Teignmouth, providing a nurturing environment for all swimmers.
