Located very near to Derby City centre, Derby West End Bowls Club offers a unique experience for bowlers and croquet enthusiasts. Established in 1913, the club celebrates its 110th year this year. The age and ability of members vary, ensuring a diverse and inclusive atmosphere.
Bowling at Derby West End is not just about the sport itself; it is also about the social aspect. From friendly matches to club, county, and even national level competitions, there is something for everyone. The club is affiliated with both Bowls England and English Bowling Federation, playing both codes of Flat Green Bowls.
The club boasts two 6 rink greens, allowing ample space for members to practise and play. In addition to the greens, there are 3 changing rooms, a clubhouse with a fully equipped kitchen and bar, accommodating up to 80 people. The club also offers car parking for approximately 20 vehicles, as well as off-road parking for a full-size coach, making it an ideal venue for touring teams, county fixtures, and charity galas.
New members are always welcome at Derby West End Bowls Club. Whether you are a competitive bowler, prefer a casual roll-up, or are just starting out and want to give it a try, you will be made most welcome. The club offers free coaching and loan equipment to beginners, ensuring a smooth introduction to the sport.
In terms of history, the club's roots can be traced back to the Mundy family, who lived at Markeaton Hall. In the 1900s, Mrs. Mundy donated land for leisure purposes, and it is believed that the current location of the club was part of that donation. The West End Bowling Club was formed in June 1913, with the original clubhouse being built adjacent to the green.
Over the years, the facilities have expanded and improved, thanks to the dedication and hard work of club members.
