East Anglia Centre for Alexander Technique

East Anglia Centre for Alexander Technique (EACAT) is a small and friendly training school located in Chelmsford, offering courses and consultations in the Alexander Technique. With a limited number of students, EACAT ensures that each individual receives personalised attention and support throughout their training.

The Alexander Technique is a practise aimed at helping individuals change long-term habits that can lead to tension and stress in the body. It can be beneficial for a range of conditions including anxiety, back and joint pain, poor posture, and breathing and vocal problems. By working with a qualified teacher, students at EACAT develop self-awareness of their reactions to life's stresses and strains, ultimately improving their overall wellbeing.

EACAT offers a comprehensive three-year training programme for teachers of the Alexander Technique, accredited by Alexander Technique Education (ATE). ATE UK is an international professional society dedicated to adhering to and promoting the original teaching methods of Frederick Matthias Alexander.

The course structure at EACAT includes twelve hours of in-person training each week, with classes held on Mondays and Thursdays from 9:30am to 3pm. There is also a monthly in-house workshop on Saturdays from 10am to 1pm, covering various relevant topics. In addition, students engage in online study sessions focused on anatomy and Alexander Technique literature, held on Wednesday evenings from 8pm to 9:30pm.

Throughout the training period, students are encouraged to keep a reflective journal to track their progress and development. Required and optional readings are provided, ensuring students have access to a wealth of resources related to the Alexander Technique. Third-year students are given the opportunity to work with visiting pupils, as well as first and second-year students. They also have the chance to have private lessons with teachers outside the course team, providing additional insights into one-on-one teaching.

The cost of the three-year training course at EACAT is currently fixed at 1,500 per term for students starting in April 2024. Subsequent student fees will be fixed at 1,600 per term for the duration of the training. EACAT aligns its term schedule with the state school system, allowing flexibility for those with school-aged children and providing opportunities for personal holidays and leisure pursuits.
