Exercising Autism is a unique physical fitness programme located in Graiguecullen, Carlow. The programme is designed specifically for children with autism, providing a structured and engaging environment for them to learn and develop fundamental movements such as running, jumping, throwing, catching, and crawling. The classes also focus on improving social skills, listening, cooperation, and turn-taking among participants.
The programme incorporates visual aids such as pictures, videos, and modelling by instructors to help children better understand and follow the exercises. Parents are encouraged to participate in the classes, not only as a way to support their child's learning but also to promote learning at home and strengthen the parent-child bond in a fun and engaging way.
Craig, the founder of Exercising Autism, is currently pursuing a PhD focusing on exercise for children with autism. With over two years of experience working with over 70 children with autism, he has also presented at international conferences on autism and sports in America, England, and Ireland. Emma, a dedicated volunteer at the programme, has been working with Craig for the past year to create fun and engaging classes for children with autism. She hopes to continue her studies to further work with children in the future.
