The Gregory River Canoe Marathon is an annual event organised by North West Canoe Club, a popular Canoeing club in Mount Isa. This exciting event attracts both novice and serious paddlers from all over Australia, creating a unique opportunity for participants to engage in a sport they may not have considered before. Taking place on the picturesque Gregory River, the race promises breathtaking scenery for paddlers to enjoy.
While the majority of participants enter the race for fun and enjoyment, there are also enticing opportunities for serious competitors to win major prize money. The current overall race record, set in 2001 by Matt Flower and Chad Meek, stands at an impressive 2 hours 43 minutes and 23 seconds. To motivate racers to surpass this record, there is a cash prize of $2000 up for grabs for anyone who manages to beat it.
In addition to the overall winner, there are various categories available for both male and female participants, including K1, TK1, TK2, Plastic Long, and TC2. Each category's first-place winner will receive a cash prize ranging from $100 to $400. Furthermore, there is a cash prize of $300 reserved for the TC2 Teams category.
For younger aspiring paddlers, there is a special shorter race designed specifically for junior participants. Separate cash prizes will be awarded to both male and female winners in this category. To make the event even more exciting, there will be random prizes awarded during the race, adding an element of surprise and anticipation.
For experienced paddlers who may need equipment, North West Canoe Club offers the option to rent Knysna K1 kayaks, as well as a selection of Sit on top Plastics and TC2 boats. For more information on rental availability, interested individuals can get in touch with Paul Fletcher at 0414483459 or email him.
The Gregory River Canoe Marathon holds a special place in the history of the sport. In 1991, Jeff Wilkinson and John Van Ryt achieved an impressive feat by breaking the 3-hour barrier for the first time in a K2, completing the race in 2 hours 51 minutes and 23 seconds. This accomplishment marked a significant milestone in the event's legacy.
Mark your calendars! The race will take place on the Sunday of the Labour Day weekend, starting bright and early at 8 am. North West Canoe Club warmly welcomes all participants, both seasoned paddlers and newcomers alike, and wishes everyone an unforgettable and enjoyable weekend. Get ready for an exhilarating adventure on the Gregory River at the Gregory River Canoe Marathon!
