JCL School of Dance, located in Bishop's Stortford, is a well-established dance school that has been operating since 1987. The school specialises in high-quality training in a fun and friendly environment, offering ballet, modern, and tap classes. Run by Julia Last, a fully registered ISTD and Mutually Recognised ISTD teacher, the school prides itself on providing a friendly and happy atmosphere for students to learn and grow.
Julia Last, the principal of JCL School of Dance, has an impressive background in the world of dance. She started her dancing journey with Leo Kersley at Harlow Ballet and went on to dance in many ballets with the company, including the role of Clara in The Nutcracker. At the age of 12, Julia performed with Harlow Ballet at the opening of the Snape Theatre in Aldburgh. She continued her studies at Bush Davies Theatre School, where she achieved Advanced Two ISTD Ballet, Modern Theatre Dance, and National exams, all with distinction.
Julia also gained her Associate ballet teacher's examination with distinction, showcasing her high level of skill and expertise.
Following her professional dancing career, Julia unfortunately had to retire due to injury. However, she decided to retrain as a teacher with ISTD examiner Ivy Baker. Julia began her teaching career at Saffron School of Dance before establishing her own dance school in Steeple Bumpstead in 1987. She then moved the JCL School of Dance to Bishop's Stortford, where it continues to thrive today.
The JCL School of Dance offers a range of opportunities for its students. Pupils, aged three and above, are entered for ISTD graded examinations, ISTD Rosettes and Medals. The school prides itself on its 100% success rate in examinations. However, if a pupil does not wish to be entered for examinations, they are still able to progress to the next class when the teacher feels they are ready.
These pupils are issued with a certificate of merit by the school.
While many students at JCL School of Dance learn solely for fun and the love of dance, some have gone on to pursue dance as a career. Former pupils have continued their studies at major vocational dance schools such as Arts Educational, London Studio Centre, and Laban. Others have been accepted and attended courses at the Royal Ballet Junior Associate and Summer School. Additionally, some former pupils have gone on to obtain degrees in dance at University.
Every two years, JCL School of Dance stages school shows at a local theatre. These shows are not only a chance for students to showcase their talents but also a means to give back to the community, as all profits from the shows are donated to charities. The shows are incredibly popular with the pupils and provide an exciting and enriching experience for everyone involved.
