The Australian association has been teaching the traditional Okinawan style Matsubayashi-ryu (Shorin-ryu), consisting of karate and kobudo, for more than 20 years. Officially formed in 1999 by Sensei John Carlyle, Renshi 6th Dan, the MKAA is the sole organisation in Australia authorised by the late Soke Takayoshi Nagamine and the current Board of Directors of the World Matsubayashi-ryu (Shorin-ryu) Karate-do Association in Okinawa, Japan.
