About

Derek Bithell, organiser for Llangollen Maelor Angling, extends a warm invitation to the sports community to discover the delights of one of the UK's premier fishing spots. The club holds exclusive rights to around 10 miles of the Welsh Dee in and around Llangollen. The river, fed by the pristine lakes of Alwen, Brenig, Celyn, and Bala, is renowned for its brown trout and grayling fishing. It also sees impressive runs of salmon and sea trout during the season.

Derek and the team take great pride in managing and preserving this stunning fishing location, set in a world heritage site and an area of outstanding natural beauty. With diverse fishing opportunities, the beats of the River Dee cater to those after salmon, sea trout, brown trout, and grayling. For those interested in coarse fishing, the lower beat offers dace, chub, roach, and pike.

Day tickets are available online or from ticket outlets for anyone keen to fish the River Dee. Membership enquiries can be directed to Derek on 01978-860012 or via email at degseyllan@hotmail.co.uk.

The club's website provides practical tips and advice for fishing the River Dee. For salmon fishing, tackle requirements vary by season, with a 13-15 foot fly rod generally recommended. Essential gear includes a good wading staff, eye protection, studded felt-soled waders, and an automatic life jacket for safety.

Fly patterns offer variety, with large black and yellow flies favoured early in the season, and ally’s shrimp family and its variations commonly used. In summer, flies like stoat’s tail or red twist can be effective. Retro patterns from Jack Hughes-Parry’s 1949 book 'Fishing Fantasy' are also worth a try.

Derek and Llangollen Maelor Angling welcome enthusiasts of all experience levels. Whether you’re a seasoned angler or a beginner, the club offers a supportive community and the perfect backdrop to enjoy the sport. Join today and experience the beauty and thrill of fishing on the River Dee.
