Maai Hyoshi Dojos is a martial arts school in Auckland, New Zealand, specialising in Combat Ninjutsu. The curriculum combines techniques from various martial arts schools, aiming to provide students with effective training combinations.
Steve Cockell, the organiser, emphasises the philosophy “Adapt or Die,” striving to produce complete martial artists who are not only physically skilled but also mentally and spiritually strong. Students train in all forms of combat, including strikes, locks, evasions, throws, weapons, and ground fighting. They also study strategies, tactics, history, and traditions of various schools of Budo and learn teaching methods, physiology, psychology, and organisational skills. Spiritual training includes sensory skills, Ki training, meditation, and spiritual 'pressure' training.
This holistic approach is symbolised by the Nin symbol of perseverance on the school's uniforms. It represents the dedication required to achieve mastery in martial arts.
Maai Hyoshi Dojos offers two main classes: Combat Ninjutsu and Traditional Ninjutsu. The Combat Ninjutsu class takes place every Thursday from 6:30pm to 8:00pm, while the Traditional Ninjutsu class is held on Saturdays from 9:00am to 11:00am. Both classes are led by Steve Cockell. Additionally, there is a Ninjutsu Weaponry class held outdoors at Alderman Drive, Henderson, next to the West Wave Aquatic Centre on Saturdays from 9:00am to 11:00am, also taught by Steve.
Besides Ninjutsu, the school offers MMA & BJJ (Mixed Martial Arts and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu) classes in Orewa. These classes are held at 8 Keith Morris Lane, Orewa, Auckland, on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7:30pm to 8:30pm, led by Tristan Watson. He can be reached at 027 769 2562.
