The Martial Arts Authority of India (Bhartiya Yudhha Kala Pradhikaran) is the premier national governing body dedicated to the promotion and development of both traditional and contemporary martial arts in India. Established in 1999 in Ahmedabad by a visionary group of martial arts leaders, this organization is recognized internationally and boasts membership in the global Martial Arts Association – International (MAA-I) with 120 member nations. The MAAI has transformed the landscape of martial arts in India, bringing structure, excellence, and a unified approach to competitions and educational advancements in the field.
India has a rich yet overlooked heritage in martial arts, with styles like Varma Kalai, Kuttu Varisai, Malyutham, Silambam, and Adithada having roots in ancient Tamil culture. In a significant achievement, the MAAI hosted its first National Martial Arts Games in 2007, which saw participation from nearly 800 athletes and officials from over 20 states. This monumental event featured competitions across various styles, including traditional, contemporary, internal forms, weaponry, and sparring, marking a milestone in Indian martial arts history.
