The history of Meibukan Gojyu Ryu dates back to 1952 when Meitoku Yagi established the first Meibukan dojo. The term “Meibukan” translates to “House Of The Pure (or Spiritual) Minded Warrior. ” Yagi Sensei, the first student of Chojun Miyagi (the founder of Goju Ryu), obtained permission to open his own dojo and became the recognised Menkyo Kaiden of the Goju-ryu style. The Meibukan Hombu Dojo has been an integral part of Okinawa Karate since then and has actively participated in organisations such as the Okinawa Goju-kai and All Okinawa Karate-do Association.
Yagi Sensei appointed international representatives during his lifetime, and their legacies continue at Meibukan Gojyu Ryu today. Currently, Yagi Sensei's eldest son, Meitatsu, serves as the Honorary Chairman of the International Meibukan Goju-ryu Karate Association (IMGKA), and his eldest son, Akihito, is the current President of IMGKA. Meitatsu is the most senior active Meibukai student of Meitoku Yagi.
Meibukan Gojyu Ryu has branches not only in Australia but also in countries like Canada, the United States, England, India, Iran, the Philippines, Russia, Georgia, Brazil, Israel, and Hong Kong. As a philosophy, Meitatsu emphasises that the aim of Meibukai is not to teach how to fight, but rather how not to fight. This approach focuses on self-control, discipline, and conflict resolution.
