Melbourne Dragons Martial Arts is Melbourne's first inclusive LGBTIQA+ martial arts club located in Abbotsford. The club offers a safe and welcoming environment for individuals of all genders and sexual orientations to learn self-defence techniques. The dojo is conveniently situated near the CBD and Collingwood Station, making it easily accessible for members.
Led by Sensei Damian Wilson, the founder of Melbourne Dragons, the club focuses on developing self-esteem, confidence, resilience, and competence through the teachings of traditional martial arts such as Goju Ryu Karate and Muay Thai/Kick Boxing. Both experienced martial artists and beginners of all ages and abilities are welcome to join and learn these practical martial arts.
Apart from self-defence classes, Melbourne Dragons also emphasises the formation of new friendships and personal connexions among its members. The club regularly hosts social events, providing opportunities for individuals to socialise outside of training hours.
Melbourne Dragons offers a belt system to track the progress of its students. Students can challenge themselves and measure their achievements through the grading process, which includes kyu (“colour”) belt assessments. These gradings are held four times a year and serve as formal assessments of the skills and techniques acquired by the students.
For beginners, Melbourne Dragons encourages them to commit to attending classes for at least 8 weeks to establish the habit and discipline necessary for training. The club offers flexible class payment options to accommodate the needs of its members.
