Ohori Judo Club is a sports club in Brisbane that specialises in the practise of judo, a traditional Japanese martial art that has developed into a popular modern Olympic sport. Judo is known as the “gentle way,” as it emphasises using an opponent's movements and strength to overcome them, rather than relying solely on brute force.
Judo offers a wide range of benefits, including improved fitness, coordination, flexibility, self-confidence, strength, discipline, stress relief, and emotional control. It is practised in a group setting, allowing individuals to develop a competitive spirit and a sense of confidence in various situations. Safety is a top priority in judo training, with strikes, kicks, and weapons not allowed. Participants wear a cotton judo suit called a judogi and practise on a soft mat surface.
Ohori Judo Club caters to individuals of all ages and skill levels. Kids classes focus on fun and building judo skills through games and activities. The club operates over four school terms, and payment can be made per lesson or per term, making it convenient and cost-effective to attend regularly. For older players, a friendly group atmosphere is provided, allowing everyone to train at their desired level.
The club offers a variety of classes throughout the week, including sessions for beginners, intermediates, and seniors. Classes take place on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, with a range of timings to suit different schedules. The schedule includes both standing judo where players practise throwing their opponents and groundwork where players grapple to pin their opponents on their back.
In addition to regular training, Ohori Judo Club also provides opportunities to participate in competitive judo at various levels. The sport can be played competitively, or simply for the health and recreational benefits it offers. Regular training can improve an individual's aerobic capacity, speed, power, strength, agility, and flexibility.
