Southern Knights Performing Arts is a vibrant and dynamic performing arts organisation located in Hove, East Sussex, England. The group specialises in precision marching and dance displays set to music, using various props such as flags, imitation rifles/sabres, and pom poms.
With a rich history dating back to 1909, when the 2nd Brighton Scouts started a band, Southern Knights has evolved into one of the largest and most successful colour guards in the UK. In 1983, the band left the Scouts and became the Imperial Knights Drum & Bugle Corps. In 1988, after merging with The Southwinds, another local youth band, they adopted the name Southern Knights. Since 1998, the organisation has focused solely on colour guard and performing arts.
The Southern Knights currently boast approximately 50 members and have earned an impressive 23 national titles across five competitive Winter Guard United Kingdom classes. They also have a specialised group called SK Stars, catering to individuals with additional needs. The organisation provides full instruction, allowing young people from school starting age to join, and no previous experience is required to become a member.
During the summer months, Southern Knights performs at local events such as fetes and carnivals, as well as staging their own performances. In the winter, the colour guards compete in their own competitive circuit, showcasing their skills at venues across the country. The group has also showcased their talents at sporting and corporate events, and have provided performers for music videos and similar productions.
Southern Knights rehearses at Blatchington Mill School & Sixth Form College in Hove. The address is Nevill Avenue, Hove, East Sussex, with the schools entrance located between 75 and 77 Nevill Avenue. Rehearsals are held regularly, and the group follows a flexible age range system. The three sections currently available are Rugrats (school starting age to maximum age of 12 years old), Juniors (8 years old to maximum age of 18 years or possibly younger with some experience), and Seniors (all ages, but typically starting around 12/13 years old).
