Takagashira Dojo

Welcome to the Takagashira Dojo, a leading martial arts training facility located in Kendal, New Zealand. The dojo takes its name from the picturesque village of Hawkshead in the Cumbrian Lake District, where it was initially founded by Mike Haft Sensei on 3rd September 2008. “Takagashira” translates to Hawkshead in Japanese, reflecting the roots and inspiration behind the dojo.

After its inception in Hawkshead, the dojo quickly gained recognition for its commitment to excellence and dedication to the art of Aikido. In 2009, the Takagashira Dojo relocated to Windermere, further solidifying its presence in the region. However, in June 2016, the dojo found a new home in the Kendal Leisure Centre and subsequently moved to its current location in the Kendal Judo Dojo in August 2017.

Led by the esteemed Mike Haft Sensei, a 5th Dan instructor, the Takagashira Dojo is renowned for its emphasis on traditional Aikido teachings. Sensei Haft brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the dojo, having trained extensively under the guidance of Koretoshi Maruyama Sensei, the founder of Aikido Yuishinkai.

Aikido Yuishinkai UK, belonging to the Aikido Yuishinkai International association, is an integral part of the Takagashira Dojo. Founded by Maruyama Sensei on 9th May 1996, Aikido Yuishinkai embodies the principles of harmony, redirection, and fluidity in its practise of Aikido. By being associated with Aikido Yuishinkai, the Takagashira Dojo guarantees a high standard of training and adherence to the authentic techniques of this martial art.

Please note that due to the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic, the Takagashira Dojo has temporarily closed its doors. However, our team is actively exploring ways to reopen our beloved dojo, ensuring that our members can resume their training and continue their martial arts journey.
