Taka Karate School, located in Lethbridge, Alberta, is a renowned martial arts school founded by Sensei Yoshitaka Kinjo in 1973. Sensei Kinjo, a 10th dan black belt in Gohakukai Karate, began his martial arts journey as a student of Sensei Iken Tokashiki in Okinawa, Japan in 1968. He has received numerous awards and honours throughout his career, including an Honorary Doctorate of Laws degree from the University of Lethbridge in 2005 and induction into the Lethbridge Sports Hall of Fame in 2008.
The history of Karate dates back approximately 700–1000 years ago in Okinawa, Japan, during the Samurai era. The art form evolved into three different styles, known as Naha-te, Shuri-te, and Tomari-te, each reflecting the major cities on the island. Gohakukai Karate, a blend of Goju-ryu and Tomari-te, was created by Sensei Iken Tokashiki to honour his teachers and preserve the traditional Okinawan art form.
Taka Karate School follows the philosophy of Gohakukai, emphasizing respect towards oneself and others, physical and mental balance, and the preservation of traditional Okinawan Karatedo. Through the practice of personal techniques, Kata, and the understanding of respect, students at Taka Karate School strive to achieve a harmonious balance between physical strength and mental acuity.
In addition to providing high-quality martial arts instruction, Taka Karate School is actively involved in the community and celebrates milestones such as the 25th anniversary of the Taber dojo. Sensei Dominique Tkaczyk and her students put on demonstrations to showcase their skills and dedication to the art of Gohakukai Karate.
