Depicts the historical Takaro Bowling Green in 1950. The Takaro Bowling Club, now known as the Takaro Lawn Bowling Club, has a rich history dating back to its formation in 1973. Originally known as the Takaro Bowling and Croquet Club, it later expanded to include sections for Table Tennis, Indoor Bowls, Tennis, and Soccer.
The establishment of the Takaro Sports Club was a result of the need to streamline finances and administration for each section. Under this new umbrella organisation, a separate body was formed to oversee the overall management and control of all the sections' assets and liabilities. Each section and affiliate now administers their own finances and pays a reasonable fee to the Sports Club.
The Takaro Sports Club Board consists of three members elected at the Annual General Meeting – the Chairman, Secretary, and Treasurer. Additionally, each section and affiliate has their President or Representative serving as Board members. The Board meets monthly (except for January) to discuss club matters and plan for future improvements.
One of the recent developments of the Takaro Sports Club is the extension to their Clubrooms, completed last year. This extension features a modernised lounge area and provides enough floor space for City Club 2000 to expand their pool tables from three to six, along with the addition of a full-size snooker table. City Club 2000, an affiliate of the Takaro Sports Club, now enjoys a permanent placement of these tables, which were previously moved in when needed. Further upgrades to the existing clubrooms and future facility plans are also in the pipeline.
In addition to the various sporting activities, the club also hosts Housie and cards games once a week, providing a friendly afternoon outing option for members. On top of these activities, there is a social membership available for those who wish to make use of the club's facilities without participating in any particular sport.
The Takaro Lawn Bowling Club also boasts Palmerston North's only all-weather artificial lawn bowls turf. This state-of-the-art facility welcomes both visitors and beginners, with afternoon roll-ups held every Tuesday. These roll-ups are a great opportunity for new players to learn and practise the sport. The official season for lawn bowls typically begins in September.
To become a member of the Takaro Lawn Bowling Club, the membership fee is $40. 00 per year, which also includes social membership of the Takaro Sports Club. Casual players are always welcome, and a $5. 00 donation towards lawn maintenance would be appreciated.
The Takaro Sports Club and its affiliated sections are proud to be a part of Palmerston North's vibrant sporting community. With a strong history and a commitment to providing excellent facilities for a range of sports, the Takaro Lawn Bowling Club is a welcoming and inclusive club where members and visitors can enjoy a friendly and competitive environment.
