About

Takemusu Aikido Canterbury is a renowned martial arts school located in the ARA Recreation Centre - Whareora, just a short distance from the vibrant city centre of Christchurch, New Zealand. Led by Sensei Kerry Madden, who has been the head instructor since its establishment in 2007 and has over 25 years of training experience, the club offers a welcoming and supportive environment for adults and children of all skill levels and martial arts backgrounds.

The dojo is always buzzing with activity, with various classes available throughout the week. In addition, the school organises weekend workshops and training camps at Okains Bay, which provide opportunities for students to deepen their knowledge and connexion within the Aikido community. Families and friends are welcome to join in these social events, fostering a sense of camaraderie and inclusivity.

Takemusu Aikido Canterbury is committed to delivering high-quality training to its students. Sensei Kerry and the dedicated team of instructors ensure that each student receives individual attention and guidance to progress in their Aikido journey. The club encourages children as young as 4 years old to participate in Aikido, as the Junior classes offer a unique blend of martial arts training and enjoyable games. Parents of children in the Junior classes are also encouraged to train alongside their children during the same session time.

During classes, students engage in Suburi, which focuses on basic cutting and movements, as well as Kumitachi and Kumijo, partner practises using the Bokken (wooden sword) and Jo (staff) respectively. The rest of the class is dedicated to exercises that improve posture, movement, blending, coordination, as well as various techniques.
