The Budokwai is Europe's oldest and most prestigious martial arts club located in the heart of Chelsea, London. Established in 1918 by Gunji Koizumi Sensei, known as the “Father of British Judo,” the Budokwai offers a wide range of classes for both children and adults.
At the Budokwai, you can nurture your physical and mental wellbeing through various martial arts disciplines. We have two dojos where you can practise Judo, Aikido, Shotokan Karate, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Hontai Yoshin Ryu Ju-Jitsu, Yoga, and Pilates. Our team of highly qualified and experienced martial arts instructors can accommodate everyone from complete beginners to Olympic-standard athletes.
The Budokwai takes pride in carefully teaching beginners techniques that are best suited to their individual abilities. As you progress through the various grades, you have the opportunity to earn the prestigious Dan grade and Black Belt in your chosen discipline.
In addition to regular classes, we also offer specialised classes such as Judo Technique classes run by Iurie Burazer on Wednesdays from 18:30-19:30. We also organise competitions and gradings for Sho & Mon grades, as well as the Judo ABC Course for absolute beginners.
The Budokwai has a rich history, with our club celebrating its 106th anniversary in January 2024. We cherish the support of our members and the wider martial arts community over the years. We are also proud to offer discounts for NHS and British Military personnel on Judo and Karate classes.
Furthermore, we invite you to join us at our iconic GK House dojo and experience the exceptional training environment and community spirit of the Budokwai. Whether you are looking to learn self-defence, improve your fitness, or compete at a high level, our dedicated instructors and welcoming atmosphere will help you achieve your goals.
