Vancouver Adaptive Snow Sports (VASS) is a non-profit organization based in Vancouver, offering ski, sit ski, and snowboard lessons for individuals living with physical or cognitive disabilities. Operating at Grouse, Seymour, and Cypress Mountains, VASS aims to make the mountain experience accessible to all. Established in 1974 by Sue Hamilton and Val MacMillan, VASS has grown to become a dedicated group of volunteers, including program coordinators, instructors, and administrators.
At VASS, students of all ages and disabilities are welcome, with adaptive equipment and specialized teaching techniques used to maximize independence on the snow. From beginner to advanced levels, programs include snowboarding, sit skiing, stand-up skiing, and advanced adaptive ski racing. In 2021, VASS is also piloting a snowshoe program. All instructors are trained in Canadian Adaptive Snowsports (CADS) certification, ensuring they are equipped to teach students effectively.
Affiliated with BC Adaptive Snowsports (BCAS) and CADS, VASS is supported by Grouse, Seymour, and Cypress Mountains. Funding comes from community partnerships with local businesses, clubs, foundations, private donations, and fundraising initiatives. The organization offers programs for skiers and boarders at various skill levels, from beginners looking to learn the fundamentals to advanced skiers aiming to compete at higher levels. Whether you're new to the slopes or a seasoned rider, VASS has a program suited to your needs.
