Vancouver Samba School

Vancouver Samba School (VSS) is a vibrant dance company in Vancouver founded by Yulia Terekh, a passionate dancer and performer of Latin and Afro-Brazilian cultural dances. Yulia's love for Brazilian Samba began in 2011 through her practice of Capoeira martial arts. Since then, she has performed in various shows in Canada and internationally, taken workshops with renowned dancers from around the world, and paraded in Afro-Brazilian Carnivals in Vancouver.

VSS is dedicated to promoting Brazilian culture and the beauty of Brazilian Samba dance in Vancouver. The school offers Beginner and Intermediate classes to the public, along with opportunities for performances and international trips to Samba Congresses and the Samba Carnival in Rio de Janeiro for students. The mission of VSS is to build a community of passionate samba dancers in Vancouver and British Columbia, supporting those interested in learning about samba, Afro-Brazilian dances, and Brazilian culture.

Samba is deeply rooted in Afro-Brazilian traditions and culture. The word "samba" originates from the Kimbundu language and represents a choreographic move that symbolizes an invitation to dance. Samba is known for transforming sorrow into joy through music and passion, with artists like Caetano Veloso and Vinicius de Moraes defining it as a powerful form of expression.

Yulia Terekh's journey in dance began as a gymnast in the USSR and evolved into a passion for Capoeira and Afro-Brazilian dance upon moving to Canada. She has explored various dance styles, from burlesque to Latin fusion, and has performed Afro-Brazilian dances like Samba no P and Maracatu around the world. Yulia finds inspiration in her students' progress and smiles in class, and she is thrilled to see them showcase their talents on stage.
