About

Aikido is a modern, non-competitive, Japanese martial art. It is a true form of Budo, a path in which martial training is utilised as a Way, or process, by which to achieve spiritual and personal growth.

Aikido training requires self-discipline and continuity of practice. Techniques are repetitively practised in a variety of forms, working towards the movement becoming spontaneous. Through training one achieves fluid movement and a relaxed and centred posture. Aikido is a dynamic art, and control over an assailant is achieved by redirecting his/her energy and movement, rather than by use of force. Accordingly, an individual’s body size and strength is of less importance than in many other martial arts, although improvements in fitness, agility, flexibility and muscular strength are amongst the benefits of consistent training. Over time, practise enhances mental focus and alertness.

Our club is a part of Aikido NSW and Aiki Kai (Australia), which was founded in 1965 by Seiichi Sugano Shihan. Aiki Kai Australia is the only Australian organisation to hold a permanent grading authority from the Aikido World Headquarters in Japan.

The Blue Mountains Dojo opened in the Faulconbridge Community Hall in March 2005, and Katoomba classes started in 2011. Classes are held twice per week, with occasional extra outdoor classes.

You are welcome to visit and watch a class.
