JudoAikido

About

The principles of Aikido, a traditional Japanese martial art. Aikido emphasises the use of an opponent's energy and movements to neutralise attacks, rather than relying on sheer strength or aggression. This makes it an ideal martial art for individuals of all sizes and physical abilities.

Aikido training at Budokai Australia takes place on Monday evenings from 7-9pm at the Marino Community Hall. The classes are taught by Bill Fettes, a highly experienced instructor with a 6th Dan black belt in Aikido. He has been practising Aikido for over 44 years and has learned from various teachers, allowing him to provide a comprehensive and well-rounded training experience.

In addition to Aikido, Budokai Australia offers specialised training in self-defence for women. These classes take place on Monday evenings from 7-7:45pm. The self-defence techniques taught are practical and effective, focusing on empowering women with the skills and confidence to protect themselves in potentially dangerous situations.

Taiji chuan 太极拳 is another martial art offered at Budokai Australia. The classes focus on simplified Taiji chuan, Yang style Taiji chuan, and Chen style Taiji chuan, each transmitted through lineage masters such as He Bing Chuan and Chen Jian Yun. Taiji chuan is a Chinese martial art known for its slow, flowing movements and emphasis on relaxation and energy cultivation. It is often practised as a form of meditation as well as a method of self-defence.

The training for Taiji chuan takes place on Tuesday evenings from 7-9pm at the Marino Community Hall. Bill Fettes has been practising Taiji chuan for over 30 years and has a deep understanding of the different styles and lineages. He provides guidance and instruction that caters to the individual needs and goals of each student.

Budokai Australia also offers training in Xingyi chuan 刚义拳 and Bagua zhang 八卦掌, two Chinese martial arts known for their direct and circular movements, respectively. These classes are also taught by Bill Fettes and take place on Tuesday evenings from 7-9pm, alongside the Taiji chuan classes.

In addition to the unarmed martial arts, Budokai Australia also offers training in traditional Japanese weapons. This includes Shindo Muso ryu Jodo (stick), Kasumi Shinto ryu Kenjutsu (sword), Isshin ryu Kusari Gama jutsu (sickle and chain), and Toda-ha Buko ryu Naginata Jutsu (halberd). These classes take place on Saturday mornings from 9am-12pm at the Fullarton Scout Hall.

The chief instructor, Bill Fettes, has over 40 years of experience in these traditional weapons and has received certifications in various lineages. His expertise and guidance ensure that students receive the highest quality instruction and gain a deep understanding of the weapons' techniques and philosophies.

Budokai Australia is not only a place for martial arts training but also a community that values the holistic benefits of East Asian fighting arts. The training programmes aim to promote physical fitness, mental well-being, and cultural understanding. Bill Fettes believes in lifelong learning and considers himself a perpetual student of the martial arts and the philosophies taught by his teachers.

Whether you are interested in self-defence, fitness, cultural exploration, or personal growth, Budokai Australia welcomes individuals of all backgrounds and experience levels. The club is located in Adelaide, South Australia and is dedicated to providing a safe and supportive environment for individuals to explore and learn these ancient martial art forms.
