Academy Karatka is a martial arts school located in Montreal, dedicated to providing traditional Shotokan karate classes to children and adults aged 7 to 70. The academy aims to promote family karate practice as a way to strengthen bonds between family members while improving their physical and psychological well-being. Proud of its partnership with Collge Ville-Marie, Academy Karatka offers karate classes to students as part of the school program called “Sport plein air”.
The name “Karatka” comes from the Japanese word "Karateka”, meaning someone who practices karate. The academy's philosophy is centred around the transmission of knowledge and learning of Shotokan karate. In Japanese, “Shotokan” translates to “house of Shoto”, with “Shoto” referring to the pen name of Gichin Funakoshi, the founder of Shotokan karate. This philosophy is reflected in the academy's encouragement for parents to join their children or partners in classes, fostering connections and creating a unique bonding experience through physical activity.
Family discounts are offered to encourage this approach.
Shotokan karate combines the concepts of “Kara” (empty) and “Te” (hand) with “Do” (way), symbolizing the “way of the empty hand”. Originating from Okinawa, Shotokan karate has become a popular martial art practised by millions worldwide. The discipline involves various combat techniques using different parts of the body, including hands, feet, elbows, and knees. The training focuses on three main areas: kihon (basic techniques), kata (forms), and kumite (sparring).
Kihon involves individual or group repetition of basic techniques, positions, and movements. Kata consists of structured sequences of techniques, simulating combat scenarios against virtual opponents. Kumite, also known as sparring, involves group work to practice techniques in a controlled environment. The academy places emphasis on the principles of Sho (pine tree), Pin (energy of the ocean), To (dynamic energy), and Kan (house), reflecting the values and traditions of Shotokan karate.
Shotokan karate is known for its lineage tracing back to Gichin Funakoshi and his son, Yoshitaka Funakoshi, who refined the style. The academy honours this legacy through its dedicated instruction and commitment to preserving the art of traditional Shotokan karate. With classes available for children, teenagers, and adults, Academy Karatka welcomes individuals and families to join in the journey of martial arts training and personal growth.
